Dogs have two Basic Behaviors either Alpha or Beta Tendencies.
Dogs that are more Alpha have the tendency to have a Higher Drive than dogs that are Beta. For example High Drive Dogs are more motivated by Prey Instinct or Ball Drive. Dogs with a High Drive may like to chase small animals, birds, squirrels, deer or the neighbor’s cat. Dogs with a High Drive may want to run after the jogger, car or cyclist on the sidewalk or road in front of your home.
These Alpha, High Drive Dogs are Driven by what’s in the Horizontal. The Alpha Dog is Driven or Motivated by what they see and their natural curiosity or tendency “To Chase”. For example, if your German Shepherd Dog is out in the front yard with you, and the neighbor’s cat runs into your yard; the “Chase is On'”. You say, “MAX COME!” with a High Command Voice. Your GSD looks at you and Bolts the other way right after the cat. The dog’s Motivation is Higher for “The Chase” due to Prey Drive or Ball Drive than being Obedient to you. On a scale of 1 to 10 the “Value of the Chase” is a Seven and our calling Max with a Command Voice and a Treat is valued at a Four. Which way do you think your GSD will run? Right, the Alpha, High Drive Dog turns his focus on chasing the cat. Your Command and Treat has very little influence; he knows he has the choice to obey or not obey.
The Stimulus of the “Chase” is much higher than your Command & Treat Stimulus. Beta Dogs on the other hand are often much less likely to be motivated by Pray Drive or Ball Drive. Their energy level for “The Chase” is usually lower and his Adrenaline Rush is less. Beta Dogs are often more Relational and obey out of Cooperation because their Motivation is to Please the Handler. Beta Dogs are usually “Lower Drive” and more “Vertically Focused” and “Less Horizontally Distracted” or Motivated. Beta Dogs are more easily trained because of their Vertical Focus and desire to Please Their Handler. Beta Dogs see themselves Hierarchically Lower in the Pack Order than Alpha Dogs.
Dogs are Pack Animals and establish a Pack Order based on Alpha Dominance Behavior. This Alpha, Pack Leader Hierarchy is often determined by the factors of Power, Position, Authority, Strength, Drive, Cunning. Alpha, Tendency Dogs, are more likely to be Pushy, Dominant, more difficult to train and have a Higher Ball, Pray Drive than Beta Dogs. Any Dog can be trained regardless of their Disposition, Temperament, Tendencies or Alpha, Beta Pack Order Hierarchy.
